Unfortunately that's not what's reported in mainstream TV and radio newscasting.
Every day and every hour TV and radio news presents newscasting with a skewed, disproportionate incidence of violence in comparison to real life where you live in Canada.
This happens because media owners and producers favour a business model that relies on profiling violent news stories which, by their analysis, increases viewership and thus generates increased advertising revenue.
In other words violent news is good for the bottom line of CBC, CTV, Global and other mainstream media companies that rely on this business model. And clearly, whether such newscasting is an accurate reflection of Canadian society is a moot point in their accounting departments.
Unfortunately this is bad news for Canadian children.
Studies show that children experience heightened anxiety in viewing violent news stories, anxiety that may linger or lead to chronic anxiety and mental health problems if the viewing is habitual or semi-habitual.
Repeated studies also show that viewing violent media content increases the chance that a child will engage in violent behaviour later in life, especially if other risk factors exist that may compound initial effects.*
That's too big a price to pay for sponsoring distorted news.
Please sign the Choose News petition to help send the message to the CRTC and Canadian broadcasters to dial back the violent content of TV and radio newscasting to more accurately reflect the true nature of our society, and to help protect our most vulnerable population.
