People and health care practitioners have confirmed to me that Choose News has helped raise awareness about the issue of newscast violence and its potential harmful effects on children and toddlers.
But there's more to be done - our petition to the CRTC (Canadian federal broadcast regulator) and the Canadian Association of Broadcasters has been ignored despite mailings and requests to address this issue. Likewise have requests to federal cabinet ministers and politicians been ignored.
This is unfortunate but not unexpected and also not a reason to stop this campaign.
Mental health science is confirming that anxiety rates among youth continue to rise, and it isn't rocket science to recognize that exposure to excessive newscast violence is likely a contributing factor to such anxiety.
Our request - our petition - remains focused on encouraging the CRTC and the CAB to reconvene and update their out-dated 'Violence Code' of 1993 with the help of expert insight from pediatric mental health specialists, and to establish new guidelines for broadcasters that better protect children and toddlers who are inadvertently exposed to newscasts.
This has been done in outer countries; it's time to follow-through in Canada.
Coincident with our 2nd anniversary, please take the time (2 mins!) to sign our petition, or ask your partner or friends to do the same.
And if you care to get involved and help support our actions, please get in touch!
