According to the report, mental health visits to hospitals for children and youth have jumped 66 per cent in the past decade, at the same time hospitalizations for conditions such as depression, anxiety and eating disorders are up 55 per cent.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young Canadians up to 19 years of age, behind accidental injuries. Evidently, wait times to receive counseling help can take up to a year and beyond.
And what do children report? A recent survey of youth conducted by Children First Canada found that their three top concerns are mental health, bullying and poverty.
While this report does not dig deeply into the nature of sources contributing to mental health problems, clearly rising anxiety rates deserve deeper study.
The contention of Choose News is that one contributing cause is the excessive violence broadcast through mainstream media's TV and radio news reporting. This news cycles never takes a break, except for commercials.
